What Is Seasonal Color Analysis? The 12 Seasons Explained

By the ESR teaching team · Updated September 2026

Short answer: seasonal color analysis is a method that identifies the colors that best harmonize with a person's natural coloring. It classifies people into seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter), each subdivided into three in the 12-season system, based on the temperature, depth and clarity of their coloring.

Where does it come from?

Seasonal color analysis builds on 20th-century color theory. The painter and Bauhaus teacher Johannes Itten linked color harmonies to the four seasons, and Albert Munsell described color in three dimensions (hue, value and chroma). The four-season approach became hugely popular in the 1980s with the book Color Me Beautiful by Carole Jackson. Professionals later refined it into 12 seasons for more precision. Since the 2020s, social media has made it a global trend again.

The three dimensions of color

  • Temperature (hue): is the coloring warm (yellow undertone) or cool (blue undertone)?
  • Value: is it light or deep?
  • Chroma: is it clear and vivid, or soft and muted?

From 4 to 12 seasons

In the 12-season system, each season is split into three according to its dominant characteristic. For example, Spring becomes Light Spring, Warm Spring and Intense (or Bright) Spring. See all 12 seasons with their palettes.

How a professional analysis works

  1. The client sits in natural daylight, without makeup, hair covered with a neutral cape.
  2. The analyst places drapes (colored fabrics) under the face, in a precise order.
  3. For each pair, the analyst observes the skin, the eyes, shadows and the overall harmony.
  4. The dominant is identified first, then the season.
  5. The client receives a palette and advice for clothing, makeup, hair color and accessories.

At ESR, this process follows the T.R.I.™ protocol (Image Revealing Test), part of the ESR Personal Color Analysis® method.

Seasonal vs Korean personal color analysis

Korean personal color analysis, very popular in Seoul, also relies on seasons and draping, usually with 4 seasons divided into sub-types. The principles are the same: temperature, value and chroma.

Can you do it yourself?

A quiz or self-test gives a first clue, but lighting, makeup and hair color easily mislead. Take the free ESR quiz for a first idea, then confirm it with a professional analyst.
